I like to look at it as the re-establishment of habits. The changes needed must become habitual. And there is -- somewhere -- a line where each of us finds comfort and encouragement short of energy-draining attentiveness.

Eventually, the skill development means a wider range of adaptation in the face of obstacles. This, as I see it, is the real pay off (predictable fuel burn for work performed).

But the mean is higher in all instances.


Or, 47-mpg is great from a 28-mpg EPA rating . . but a 34-mpg average means the most of all despite "rain, sleet and dark of night".
