Try to avoid buying a car from someone who says it gets significantly lower mileage than you think it ought to get. Whether it's the car or the driver at fault for the poor mileage record, there's a decent chance it's not as mechanically sound as you'd like.
Owner: "You can redline it in the city and still get 22 mpg."
Me: "You've told me what I needed to know. Goodbye."
I rank mileage potential by:
- Engine displacement.
- Roof-line and height.
- Engine / transmission technology.
