On my old grill covers I painted them white to match the car just for fun, I'm leaving the current ones black.

First cleaned them off and rinse, then used an adherence promoter, light grey primer and then white.

Temp seems important in promoting the paint to dry effectively, even if you paint outside and then put it near a radiator inside.
