The Mk5 "Scrote" kind of has that "ahhh, well, we just couldn't be bothered to try" aspect about it. The Astra was OK but cleverly (at the time) it reused the older car's suspension bits which in turn dated from the early 1980s - but with newer engines such as the Isuzu Diesels and the first gen small Ecotecs.

GM Europe flogged boatloads of Astras / Kadettes - Ford not so much.

The good end to this story is that it spurred Ford of Europe to do the Focus which was really quite good, and different looking.
