Looks good for a temporary fix. Watch you temp gauge.

For the permanent one consider a sheet of perforated stainless steel with a second layer that slides back and forth via a choke cable. With proper hole spacing, you could get ~75% flow with the holes lined up and ~25% with them overlapped.
