I was in the same boat. I spent from 2002 to 2011 living with in 2 miles of work.
In the winter my drive was so short I had to charge the batteries on the suburban with a battery charger because they would go dead after a couple weeks from not fully charging in the cold due to the very short drive to and from work.

Over 9 years I figure I saved up to 2000 hours of drive time cut fuel use by around 70%.
