(Austin) Metro HLE 1.0 claimed 82 MPG (imp) in 1982.
It was only a 4 speed too, and had OHV and a carb.
Gearing was ~19 MPH / 1000 in top, top wack was 82 if you were lucky, 0-60 in 18 seconds - you were more likely to run out of road than speed.
