Let's say you're driving in town with lots of lights, accelerate no more than just enough to roll to the next red light so that you arnt using brakes to stop untill you get to about 15 mph or slower, which means if the distance between you starting and stopping at the next light is (let's say) 1 mile, accelerate for the first half mile and let the car coast in neutral for the next half mile to the red light...this is more efficient than what most people do, accelerate up to speed and slam on the brakes just before the red light...The simple way to figure out how it works is, once the car/truck has momentum, it will go without any engine power for a while (some more than others) so whenever possible use that momentum to travel the distance need to the next stop you have to make
