The Suburban sits in the driveway like a big blue burden, a shiny mechanical lawn ornament that obstructs the view of the house. We don't use it much these days. The only trips we take in it are guilt trips.

The Suburban drinks gasoline like a rugby team at last call.

It's got a 37.5-gallon fuel tank, and at 15 miles to the gallon, it eats up 562.5 miles of highway on a full tank, enough to get from Fort Worth to San Antonio and back. That's eight hours of non-stop highway driving, and it used to thrill me to think I could lug the family and the luggage that far with breaks only for the occasional roadside kolache and cola.

That was six years ago, when gas was about a buck-fifty and I could fill it up for about $55.

Now the price at the pump, as if you need to be told, is somewhere around $3.80 for the cheap stuff, so it costs about $142 to fill it up, if I can afford to put that much of a dent in my debit card at one time.

So, like everyone else suffering from petrol-induced diminishing returns, I've been looking for ways to cut down on gasoline consumption, which explains why my bicycle recently underwent a tune-up and why I've been reading the Web site ecoModder.com.
