The thing to remember about music is that its dynamic. My last system had 900 watts on tap for the peaks. But even with compressed metal, the most it was using on average was 225 watts, and that's with the volume all the way up. That's about the same as running the car with the lights on, when you add up all the little accessory lights and the fogs. That's with loudness wars era music. With classic rock, etc, the most you'd use on average is 50-100 watts, even at full volume.
