You just want to get the gasses out as quickly as possible with minimum back pressure. Theres no valve overlap or scavenging to worry about. The prechamber traps enough heat to keep combustion going for the next cycle. 84-87 W201 (190D) are the most likely 5 speeds you'll find. 77-83 W123 (240D) are the most likely 4 speed manuals. The OM616 in the 240D might actually bolt up to your existing transmission but not 100% sure.
