Get some pictures of that thing posted! Sounds like a great project.
Is the car running now? If it is I'd focus on cleaning it up and replacing body panels before doing anything drastic like a motor swap. It should do pretty well in stock form, and if nothing else at least you can get some base mpg numbers to improve on.
