Not in all cases. The Smart car gets surprisingly bad mpg according to the EPA for how small and horrible it is. My motorcycle is less than 500lbs and only achieves 40mpg, or about the same as a Toyota Corolla.

Small does not necessarily imply efficient, since that is only 1 aspect of the efficiency pie.

I get your point, but I don't see "the oil company" as having masterminded propaganda to sell efficient vehicles to people. Even if the U.S. doubled the mpg of all cars, the world would figure out how to consume cheap oil.
