I wouldn't go and try to do something to a brand new subie.

Just spend the money on a cheap beater you can take around. A ford festiva will get 50 mpg and can be had for a a few hundred dollars. Unless you're just stuck on the idea of having one car, or you dont drive enough to justify two cars, I dont know.
