It isn't the price of gasoline in the old pictures, it's more the complete lack of concern over availability, consequences, etc, that I remember (as one goes back a few more decades). America was once the land of "the new", the future be it infrastructure, options, people, what-have-you. An empire at imperial zenith we now know . . bu heady and intoxicaticating when one is young & impressionable. Cheap energy we could take for granted.

The Land of Happy Motoring as one commentator put it.

Soon enough, PAN AM would take us on a glorious cruise in orbit. And humanity would someday fill the solar system. No ends.

Old pictures make all of this more than bittersweet. Nostalgia for those flawed assumptions.
