I'm a 1998 odyssey owner. In mixed driving I've never had a tank below 20.5mpg with an average now in the 22.xx range. Highway mpg is quite good at around 28, but the newer honda vans can achieve this with all the new technology, but at a much higher price.
My van currently has about 228k on the clock. Since I bought the van at 137k miles it's been an oil burner. Conventional oil results in about a quart used every 500miles. Valvoline maxlife extends the burning to about 1 quart every 1400 miles with little negative effect on economy. (both 5w30) They require little maintenance with plug changes at 30k, cap and rotor at 60k, timing belt at 90k intervals. Parts are not particularly expensive.
You would be hard pressed to find another vehicle as flexible with as many features as the Honda. My favorite is the four conventional door layout with power roll down rear windows.
Obviously I vote for the Gen 1 odyssey.
