I'm thinking I might replace the belt, idler and tensioner anyway when I do the clutch in the spring.

Cam belts on older VW Diesel engines should be replaced with tensioner and idler after 60000km (37000miles), some say fter 70 or even 80 thousands. And you have to be careful with bump starts so maybe that's not the best idea to P&G using bump starts anyway, regardles clutch. There's nothing against to P&G using starter of course. And if you want to use bump start for P&G you should remember to warm up the engine before you'll try it. I've seen engines destroyed after bump starts because cam belt missed a tooth. I was changing cam belt more often (50000km) just to be on a safe side. It's fairy easy to change it without any specialized tools, and the cost isn't great. Hope this helps.
