Tracker CEL light driving me crazy!

1998 Tracker, 174k KMs (108k miles), 1.6L 16V. Every once in a while I would get the Check Engine Light coming on, usually on the highway. There were some ignition issues at the time, so I just figured it was related to that. But, now that it's all sorted out and runs great, the light is coming on more and more. I put a scanner on it and it always comes up as a generic EGR fault (I think the code is P0400). So I pulled the EGR valve off, expecting it to be full of crud. Nope, it sure wasn't, and the ports coming out of the cylinder head were clean too. So, any ideas? The thing runs like a top, it's never been messed with or modified, but the light is coming on every 2 or 3 days now if I take it on the highway.
