The currently-made VW Kombi is fitted with the 4-banger 1.4L flexfuel, not the 3-banger TDI (which could be a great option for the 600).

Anything with spark plugs won't be as cool as a Diesel
Anyway, if I would perform an engine swap into a Fiat 600 and couldn't get a Diesel, I'd look for a Subaru flat-4.
