I like them when they're done European-style, so the traffic often can go around without losing speed. (Though I admit to having never actually driven a car in Europe, just watched or biked through.) But here they mostly seem intended to slow traffic, since they have too small a radius. There's one on a route I drive frequently: after 100 miles or so over mountains, there's 10 mile straight, open highway, then a light at a major junction. So a year or two ago, they constructed a roundabout about a quarter mile shy of the junction. Came along about 2 AM, half asleep and not knowing what they'd done. I survived, but I did the first half of it on two wheels, the second on the other two :-)
