I'd rather look for some engine with direct injection due to the higher efficiency and easier cold starts, but the power-to-weight ratio for direct-injection Diesels under 1.2L is usually not so great.

The same Daihatsu engine is (or at least was) available in America as a Briggs and Stratton's engine.
