The challenge is to use the hot air only during cruise. Typically the PCM will pull a proportional amount of extra timing to the load you apply. If you're going to be doing pollute and glide then the IATs can reduce the effectiveness of your acceleration phase.

Of course this makes sense as your cylinder filling and thus cylinder pressures will increase. Old cars are not very sophisticated because emissions laws didn't require emissions results outside a very standard operating range. While hot air injection may save a little fuel the NOX emissions will probably go through the roof. You may be better off working with EGR.
