It is not just catastrophic failure. I lost my '86 Rabbit when some jerk cut me off and slammed the brakes (for a R/R crossing light, but he did brake way early). Even though I started braking before he did, I slid into him anyway. ABS on a new car versus bad brakes and tires on an old one.

The damage was not that bad but the Rabbit was a real health hazard, offering no protection at all.
