I do notice that steady speed does help and with a heavy load the speed of your vehicle does matter. If I were driving with extra weight my car would have to struggle to maintain 60mph, I notice this when I did a test run from New Orleans to Austin. On my way home to New Orleans I was not really gunning it but going 80mph with a light foot and got amazingly 450 miles and it ate less than half a tank of gas. Not to mention being able to be in lean burn mode as well.
