there's only distance (MILES) and quatity of non-renewable hydrocarbon consumed (GALS). And, hypermiling is about achieving the greatest number of miles for the least number of gallons.

I've thought about this too. MPG as a standalone piece of data does not. MPG as you're driving does. 55 MPG at 20 MPH is a lot different than 55 MPG at 60 MPH. They're different GPH burn rates.
