I think it is kinda stupid though, plug in hybrid is the right all-around tool, range extender is a "show my EV car off in other cities" tool, but still they automate so much in hybrids that it is hard to realize their full efficiency potential.
At the wheels few 40hp gassers would put down anywhere near 40 hp most are lucky if they put down 78% of the original rating, which also is fluffy.

That said you missed the .06gph per 1000 watt, that rating which exists in gensets cannot be achieved by any over the road engine I know of (if we convert hp to watts for the direct drive eq.)

The HP rating of the genset motor is completely meaningless, but the fuel consumption for a given output of electricity is.
