I've had an MR2 electric pump (on a manual switch) in my 93 240sx for well over a year now, and swerving works just fine at speed (occurs regularly in LA - people love to try hitting me).
I'm kind of surprised that nobody has mentioned that additional benefit of disabling your PS - good workout! I've definitely gotten stronger as a result
