Take a look where your engine draws the intake air, usually that would be behind the top grill.
Blocking that completely will probably make it draw warm air heated by the radiator. That may not be what you want if you have an EGR; the combined heat would cause pinging, the engine will compensate by retarding the ignition.
Lower grill blocking will lower under hood pressure so more air will flow through the upper grill.
You can block part of it if just to compensate for that.
