Whoops forgot to mention, I have a mostly reliable 99' Mustang Convertible (auto, v6 - on a good day 24mpg highway) and the wife has a fairly reliable 06' Jeep Liberty 4x4 (auto, v6 - on a good day 20mpg highway) - The Jeep Liberty will be the kid moving car. Getting something like a Jetta Wagon TDI would allow us to have another option (and added hassle of moving the car seat to and from ;-)) However my initial goal was to get something that would pay for itself from gas savings and save me a hefty chunk of cash in a few years from the fuel efficiency (compared to the Mustang)
