Yup. The 04-07 CTS-V has comparable power and weight to the 2003 BMW M5 and does get better real-world fuel economy.

Not only that, but

- if you were to put them in a box: the LS2 and LS6 motors actually fit in a smaller box than a DOHC V8 with comparable output power (e.g. 5.0L 2003 BMW M5 motor) due to the width of the latter's cylinder heads

- the LSx's weigh less

- the LSx's have a lower center of gravity


One thing I like about the CTS-V over the 5-series is it uses A-arms in the front suspension, instead of McStruts, which is kinder on the tires in spirited driving ... probably because they can fit with the narrower LSx engine.

The whole hp/L argument is a bit misguided, hp per external dimensions, per weight, and per BSFC @ cruise conditions are probably better metrics.
