Dual-fuel engines have been around since the 1920s. There are old Fairbanks-Morse dual-fuel engines dating back to World War II still running in the oil patch - where natural gas is often flared off. (Price = zero)

By using the diesel combustion event as a "blowtorch" to ignite a very lean natural gas mixture you can dispense with a throttle for power modulation.

Your can do the same thing with a very hot spark plug.
