How about if we cover airplanes and discuss how they move at much greater speeds and have lower rates of crash or death? Air travek is very heavily used and traffic is congested these days too. Maybe we can learn from air travel? It's been many people's dream to eliminate ground based transportation. Once you leave atmo, inertia is your only enemy.
I think that it was "3001: The Odyssey that Never Should Have Happened" that had a ring around the world. You took an elevator traveled however far around the world that you wanted and then another elevator back down, but that sounds very limited to me.
