Alternator terminals

I have a 2007 Mitsubishi 'i' car, the 660cc gasoline version.
I fitted a voltmeter and noticed some unexpected behaviour.
When I drove to work this morning, the voltage sat at 14.4V or so. After a while of driving the voltage started to switch between 14.4V and 12.6V and it seems to be based on some kind of system, not just like the alternator was randomly cutting out. On my way home this afternoon, the same thing happened.
I've been driving at night and not noticed the headlights dimming, or any other 'symptoms' of this.

Does this sound like 'intelligent alternator control' or something similar?
The alternator has a connector marked GRLF. What does that stand for?
