The alternator system is designed to keep battery always topped up, but solar panel needs time to top up battery, so if it is more than a 5-10w battery topper, to do it most effectively you do need a system to disable alternator circuit, otherwise it will just do it's job and leave the solar panel as a wasted fixture.
In addition to this additional battery capacity as an energy buffer would be of benefit, so that one could do at least 1-2 hours driving without any additional power inputs. This will help even out a day or two of no Sun.
