In the old continent not everyone would know what a cord is. Or firewood. Can't burn it in my gas-burning central heating system. When I chop a tree it goes out with the other garden mulch.
I have a weak spot for unusual or archaic units; my last name is derived from one.
When Napoleon conquered Holland he introduced new units and made family names mandatory; killing the old units but preserving some of them in the naming system.
