Non Trailer options
You know roof racks and bins, and / or hitch rack and bins may have more weight limitations but are a lot more economical that dragging a trailer.

Oh, there is a more aerodynamic configuration for the green step stools. But we did this instead of pulling a trailer. We got 21.3 mpg on the trip, and went a lot faster than when we averaged 17.3 the year before. (10 to 20 mph faster) But the trailer was a 5x8 enclosed with 4' walls. I think we would have got 18 to 19 had we used the trailer with lower walls. (and the higher speed profile) The trips were somewhat different as well. (chicago to colorado vs chicago to wyoming)
