Otherwise I'd say wait for the 2014 Honda Fit hybrid. It claims 86 mpg [edit: according to the optimistic Japanese testing cycle] even though its power and acceleration put current hybrids to shame. The Atkinson cycle engine and separate electric motor paired to a double clutch gearbox, allowing them to operate different gears at the same time makes for that.
