You may be able to slot the holes on your existing stator plate. You don't have to have a lot of extra material / grind out the holes very far, to get a degree of advance. Might also google images of modified stator plate. How much damage could be done? Aside from the stator plate itself, if your timing is advanced too far you could have bad enough detonation to destroy your engine. Years ago I did this on a yamaha banshee, which there is a large aftermarket for and huge tuning knowledge base. So I had heard from multiple sources that you could safely run 4 degrees of advance, and that that was about the maximum the oe stator plate could be carved out to. So my modification was fairly worry free, and 4 degrees seems huge for a manufacturer to leave on the table. In terms of increased power, this was easily the best free engine mod I have ever done to any vehicle.
