it was thought the yamaha banshee could be safely advanced so far because the engine was essentially a RD350 engine (air cooled street motorcycle) that yamaha added water cooling to and stuck it in a quad. presumably yamaha was either too lazy, or playing it very safe, and left the timing the same.

The Banshee engine is based on the RZ350 engine, a much advanced version of the RD engine with liquid cooling, reed valves, and movable power valves in the exhaust ports. I'm pretty sure there are no interchangeable parts between a RZ and RD engine.
