Another little tidbit on this saga with my air preheater. I usually run 87 octane (I know I'm not supposed to, but it's cheaper) and the intake air temp will be around 120 to 130. In a tank of 87, I added about 4 gallons of 91 because I was going for a run on the interstate. The intake air ran a bit cooler, usually around 100 to 110. On the trip back, I added 14 gallons of E85 to the 4 gallons of gas already in there, and the intake air plummeted to the fresh air temperature.

So does Volvo compensate for the wrong octane being used by pulling in hotter air (which should mean less total air going into the cylinders) instead of adjusting the timing? I was also watching the ignition advance timing guage and it stayed pretty constant according to engine speed. I didn't expect that at all.
