I disagree, the only win for the VW is in luggage space - initially, the MGB wins on spares backup (you can build a "new" one more or less from scratch) and I think performance potential is about even based on those VW Dragsters (straight line only) in the 1960s.
Start with an MGB-GT built from a "new" bodyshell (you can order one now, online) with Sebring extended arches, Frontline suspension, V8 or Turbo and Cosworth 5sp trans - fast in a straight line and around corners...
And if you take the back seats out of a GT the luggage space is as good as the VW
