For cheap and available:
Honda Civic
Ford Escort
Toyota Corolla
Dodge Neon
Chevy Cavalier
Most (all?) had barebones options, were cheap to begin with, and got good mileage. I'd have no problem finding a dozen of these by tomorrow if I had to. For cargo area, I agree with the Escort wagon.
