YOKOHAMA develops "AERO-Y" EV Concept Car | Electric Vehicle News

Quote:
..............In designing the "AERO-Y" body, MOONCRAFT.CO., LTD. represented by Mr. Takuya Yura*, a racing car designer, cooperated with YOKOHAMA..................

Aerodynamic drag reduction on vehicles With YOKOHAMA’s proprietary tire aerodynamic technology, dimples are employed for the tire side that becomes outer surface when mounted on a car, and fin-shaped protuberances for the tire side that becomes inner surface. While the dimples help reduce aerodynamic drag on the tire, the fins generate air flow that pushes the car forward by increasing the air pressure in the front side of a wheel wells, thus making it possible to contribute to fuel efficiency improvement by reducing aerodynamic drag on vehicles.

It is a conceptual car manufactured based on the company’s desire to make users feel intuitive sense of "pleasure of driving". In developing the "AERO-Y", YOKOHAMA focused on "aerodynamic drag reduction" as the theme and intensively utilized its latest technologies cultivated at various divisions through the aerodynamics-based designing of tires and bodies and the development of aerospace products and HAMATITE adhesives and sealants.

Shell in carbon fiber. Attention technicians focused on improving aerodynamics and went so far as to draw properly sidewalls (called BluEarth-EV) to optimize the air resistance. The shell is carbon fiber, in order to limit the weight to 1,285 kg (including batteries) and the union of the various parts is obtained by gluing the Hamatite, an adhesive developed by Yokohama itself.

Central engine. Aero-Y will be used to participate in races electric vehicles in Japan and three-phase motor 215 kW and 370 Nm placed at the center of the car and pack 56 kWh lithium-ion batteries.

Air flows turbulently inside the wheel wells when a vehicle is moving, and some of this air flows out alongside the vehicle and causes aerodynamic drag to worsen. YOKOHAMA has tackled this problem by pursuing research using both aerodynamic simulations and wind tunnel testing.

This technology was unveiled today at the 26th Computational Fluid Dynamics Symposium being held at the National Olympics Memorial Youth Centre in Tokyo until December 20, and is also to be presented at the Tyre Technology Expo 2013 in Cologne, Germany, from February 5, 2013.
I can move this car and it's tires into a thread of it's own.

FYI: There is a document download in that last link (above).
