With an hour commute each day in the BC Mountains I've found studded winters a necessity. I had non-studded winters on the civic until December, but after doing 30 (km/h) in town and sliding through turns I wasn't going to take any more chances.
That said, I agree that most coastal people just need to learn how to drive and at best grab a nice set of non-studded winters for heading up the ski hill.
