The FE you can get out of the car depends a whole lot on just how you drive it. There are people who can get 50+ MPG out of it reliably, day-in-day-out, year after year. There are also those who cannot get any better than 25 MPG.
Depending on your exact circumstances, 40 MPG should be well within reach. You just have to be willing to drive in a way that gets you 40 MPG.
