Never done an extensive survey. but it seems most American cars have them on the wrong side, while Japanese &c have them on the right.
It's not that I have problems figuring out where my filler is (always on the right, on every car I can remember owing). It's just annoying when I pull up to a pump at the same time as someone driving an American car, and we almost do a head-on.
