what is happening is the torque converter is unlocking and allowing the driven portion(transmission side of converter) to overrun the driving portion(engine side of converter).

Or that. I'm pretty hazy on what
exactly happens in my automatic transmission. It just feels like neutral (though not neutral proper as if I had moved the shift selector), based on how the tranny responds when I press on the gas again. Thanks for explaining!
