most conventional automatics act as such, but i'm sure there are exceptions, especially with extremely recent autos, especially the dual-clutch type, since those are basically computer controlled manuals. for OP, the 05 2500 is likely a 4L80 transmission, which is a computerized and 4th gear added TH-400, which came about in..... the mid 60s, IIRC. solid performer, though it has more parasitic losses than the lighter-duty 4L60/4L65 that would have been used on the 1500 trucks of the same year.
