OP might see it differently, and he may be above my pettiness, but I won't have someone think they are doing better because of "nothing." I will help someone as far as they want, but one won't see the day I work hard on something that someone else doesn't care about.

It's not "helping her" as much as it is "helping us". Those mods would be transparent to OP's wife yet still would help her save gas. The OP's goal is to save $$$.
In your words, OP would not hear whining or excuses about driving better since she may not even notice the car is different.
