Simple answer:
1) If engine has
carburetor, then YES a low-restriction air filter is an improvement.
2) If engine has
fuel-injection, then NO a low-restriction air filter is not an improvement.
Why, you ask? Carburetor "works" on air-pressure differential and a clogged air filter will decrease the air-pressure acting upon the fuel venturi jets. With fuel-injection, air-pressure (or lack of it) is nolonger a problem because the engine electronics "measures" incoming air flow (or air mass) coming into the engine (ahead of the intake manifold) and automatically "compensates" for clogged, lower flowing, air filters.
